Bis Anfang 20 glaubte Matt Holubowski, er sei dazu bestimmt, Englischlehrer zu sein. Doch als er in Südostasien unterwegs war, überkam es den reisebegeisterten Kanadier wie eine Epiphanie und er entschied sich für einen anderen Weg: für die Musik, die ihn schon sein Leben lang begleitete und ihm ermöglichte, seine Ideen in Geschichten auszudrücken, oft geprägt von einer Art Existenzialismus, von seinen Beobachtungen der Menschen und Orte sowie seinen Erfahrungen, die er im Laufe der zahlreichen Backpacking-Trips machte.
Vier Jahre später erreichte sein Album „Solitudes“ Gold-Status, mit mehr als 40.000 verkauften Einheiten in Kanada. Es wurde für das englischsprachige Album des Jahres bei der ADISQ Gala 2017 nominiert und die gleichnamige Tour ebenfalls in der Kategorie englischsprachige Show des Jahres. Die „nie endende“ Konzertreise führte Matt Holubowski von Montreal nach Berlin, New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa und in viele andere Städte in und außerhalb von Kanada. Mehr als 200 Shows waren es am Ende, mit mehr als 25.000 verkauften Tickets. Es folgten Supportshows für Künstler*innen wie Ben Folds und Sophie Hunger sowie Auftritte beim Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee, Robert Smiths Meltdown in London, Reeperbahn Festival, Printemps des Bourges, Festival d’été de Québec, Winnipeg Folk Fest, Osheaga und vielen mehr.
Anfang 2019 begleitete Matt Singer-Songwriter Dan Mangan im Osten Kanadas, ein letzter Walzer, bevor er sich zwei Monate in die Wälder von Banff, Alberta, zurückzog, um sich dem Songwriting für sein nächstes Album zu widmen. Dort entstanden die Songs von „Weird Ones“, das am 21.02.2020 erscheint. Während er sich langsam vom Folk wegbewegt, erkundet er neue Sounds und arbeitet die Arrangements der Songs in Zusammenarbeit mit seinen Musikern aus, mit Gitarrist Simon Angell, Bassist Marc-André Landry, Drummer Stéphane Bergeron und Cellistin/Keyboarderin Marianne Houle.
Die Singleauskopplung „Two Paper Moons“ zeigt vielleicht am besten, welche neue Richtung das Album einschlägt, wie Matt Hobulowski sagt: „‘Two Paper Moons‘ is arguably the most important song on the record because it was the one that spawned the surrealist direction I took and the desire to create an alternate reality for myself. It’s a form of escapism, which is in stark contrast with my two previous records, where I painstakingly observed and commented on various ideas about the world around me. Because my background was Political Science and Philosophy, I’ve always had a tendency to write more direct lyrics, whereas TPM was born out of the desire to be more imaginative and image oriented.“
Im Juli 2019 unterbrach Matt sein zurückgezogenes Dasein noch einmal, um die Abschlussveranstaltung der Montreal International Jazz Festival zu präsentieren, ein erinnerungswürdiger Abend sowohl für den Künstler als auch für sein Publikum. Am nächsten Tag schrieb La Presse: “Holubowski touched us with grace, sincerity and sensitivity. He also has a charisma which cannot be glossed over, it was so captivating”.
2020 wird er mit dem Album „Weird Ones“ auch wieder auf internationalen Bühnen stehen.

Born of a Polish father and a Quebecer mother, Matt Holubowski grew up in a bilingual household in Hudson, QC and has always lived at the crossroads of the French and English languages. This notion of isolation of two cultures within a single territory fascinates this globe-trotter; lover of his planet and its infinite cultures. With this second album, Solitudes, the self-taught musician, poet and composer offers eleven titles that in many ways evoke isolation, estrangement, and exile, but also delves into the forms of solitudes we seek and often at times need.
Holubowski’s unmistakable voice and steadfast personality was revealed to some through his appearance as a finalist on the super-popular TV show La Voix. He has since worked tirelessly, surrounding himself with invaluable musical collaborators, with Stéphane Bergeron (Karkwa) on drums, Marc-André Landry on bass, Simon Angell (Patrick Watson) on guitar and Marianne Houle on cello. Connor Seidel produced the record, and co-mixed it with Warren Spicer (Plants and Animals).
The resulting Solitudes sold over thirty-five thousand units in Canada since its release in September 2016 and was nominated for Album of the Year (English-language) at the 2017 ADISQ Gala.
Its following tour took him from Montreal to Hamburg, New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, and many other cities in Canada and abroad with over 130 shows booked. He will be opening for Ben Folds’ European tour in fifteen cities across the continent, followed by performances at Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee, Printemps de Bourges, Festival d’été de Québec, The Great Escape in Brighton, Winnipeg Folk Fest and still more to be announced.
